Empowering Kalamazoo: Community Initiatives Driving Positive Change

Kalamazoo is home to a variety of community-driven initiatives aimed at fostering empowerment and transformation. These programs address diverse needs, from housing stability to cultural enrichment, reflecting the city’s commitment to collective well-being.

Shared Prosperity Kalamazoo

Shared Prosperity Kalamazoo (SPK) is a bold plan to transform our community into a place where every adult and child thrives. Its vision is to eliminate generational poverty by creating more broadly shared prosperity. SPK supports two-generation (2Gen) programs, which build family well-being by working with children and the adults in their lives together.

Building Blocks of Kalamazoo

Building Blocks is a collaborative organization offering specialized, block-level community organizing. Their 14-week Catalyst Program engages residents in meetings and project planning to complete exterior home-improvement projects. Blocks participating in the Catalyst program can continue involvement by becoming a Block Action Group, planning community or individual home projects for up to two years.

Rootead

Rootead serves people of all ages seeking healing, connection, and liberation, centering the experiences of Black and Brown people. Their programs include Birth Justice, Youth Enrichment, and Community Healing, delivered through a decolonized and trauma-informed lens. Rootead also hosts events like the annual Juneteenth Celebration and offers a Milk Bank Hub.

Community Homeworks

Founded in 2009, Community Homeworks aims to keep people in their homes and develop homeowner self-sufficiency. Their programs provide critical home repairs and education workshops on home maintenance and repairs, ensuring homes are safe, decent, and sustainable.

Kalamazoo Black Male Alliance

The Kalamazoo Black Male Alliance offers cultural and educational programs addressing the unique challenges Black men face in Kalamazoo. Their initiatives provide opportunities for Black males to come together, network, and learn from one another, fostering increased self-confidence and improved communication skills.

Junior League of Kalamazoo

The Junior League of Kalamazoo focuses on the well-being of women and children, offering leadership opportunities and community projects. Since 2018, they have volunteered over 500 direct service hours and granted more than $52,000 to community organizations supporting women and children.

These initiatives exemplify Kalamazoo’s dedication to community empowerment and transformation, addressing various needs and fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for all residents.
